Additional Subject Information

As global demand for air travel increases, aviation-related environmental impacts are also likely to increase. Local air quality, ambient noise levels, water quality, energy use and climate change are some of the most prominent impacts of concern. The ICAO defines an Environmental Management System (EMS) as a set of management principles intended to identify, evaluate, monitor, and reduce the negative environmental impacts of an organization’s activities. EMS can simplify complex environmental issues by providing a structured framework that makes environmental management more efficient, reduces costs, and allows for continuous improvements. In addition, EMS facilitates reporting and evaluation of environmental performance, compliance with National Environmental Policy Act, Part 150, Part 161 and other Federal environmental laws and regulations, and management of permits such as NPDES. A well-designed and implemented EMS should meet the requirements to be certified to the ISO 14001 international standard as well as the EMAS regulation. EMS can help airports qualify for certifications from globally renowned organizations, such as LEED, GC-Mark and Envision, in recognition of its commitment to reducing its environmental impact.
